Ancient Egyptians played a variation of hockey using a ball and stick. Modern hockey was formed in Canada in the 1800s with the first official set of rules established in 1879. Professional teams formed in the early 1900s in the US and Canada and the National Hockey League (NHL), which is still the dominant professional league, was established in 1917. Each year, NHL teams compete for the Stanley Cup. The other pinnacle of hockey is the Olympic Gold Medal.
